Habitat: In mesic, mixed oak forest dominated by maturing Quercus rubra. Canopy 70-80% cover, 15-25m hgt. Subcanopy: 40-60% cover, shrubs 50-75% cover. Convex edge of shallow gully undulating, dark loess, 3" A-horizon, high leaf litter and organic humus. Associates: Aralia nudicaulis, Galium borealis, Parthenocissus quinquefolia.
