Habitat: on steep, north-northeast-facing slope of 60ft. sandy terrace immediately above the river. Short, sparse canopy of Ostrya virginiana, Betula papyrifera, Tilia americana 7 Juniperus virginiana, with occasionally dense shrub layer dominated by Cornus rugosa. Dark, rather coarse sand. Associates include Carex peckii, Aquilegia canadensis, Aralia nudicaulis, Cystopteris cf. fragilis, Rubus strigosus, and Ostrya virginiana seedlings. Forming small carpets.
