Habitat: Rugged terrain along the [river]...in small, narrow gorge cutting into extremely steep, east-facing slope of 200-foot ridge above the river. Shaded by surrounding northern hardwood forest trees, especially Thuja occidentalis & Betula allegheniensis, with a dense subcanopy over the gorge composed of Acer spicatum, Sorbus decora, and Sambucus racemosa. On cool, moist to fairly dry, often moss-covered ledges in andesitic/rhyolitic cliff-lined gorge. Associated species include Thelypteris phegopteris, Dryopteris intermedia, Taxus canadensis.
