Habitat: mesic prairie especially in small, wet swales. Mesic to wet organic loam. Associated species include Salix bebbiana, Cornus stolonifera, Solidago canadensis, Fragaria virginiana, pedicularis lanceolata, Cypripedium candidum, Carex buxbaumii, C. stricta.
