Habitat: dry, dolomite cliff on upper portion of extremely steep, 200 foot, south to southwest-facing bluff. In crevices and shallow soil accumulations on small ledges of the much-fractured, 30-60 foot rock face. Full sun to partially shaded by Juniperus virginiana and Quercus macrocarpa. Associates include Solidago sciaphila, Campanula rotundifolia, Artemisia campestris, Aquilegia canadensis, Aster ericoides, Pellaea glabella, Muhlenbergia cuspidata, Carex eburnea.
