Habitat: Moderately rugged forested terrain along creek. In degraded (past-grazed) hardwood forest variously dominated by Populus tremuloides or Quercus macrocarpa, with patches of Acer negundo, Quercus ellipsoidalis, and Tilia americana. Understory sparse to quite dense, composed variously of Ostrya virginiana, Corylus cornuta, Ulmus americana, Viburnum rafinesquianum, and Zanthoxylum americanum. Compacted sandy-loam. Additional associates include: Orzyopsis asperifolia, O. racemosa, Desmodium glutinosum, Cryptotaenia canadensis, Aster macrophyllus.
