Habitat: Rolling forested drumlin plain. Infrequent to occasional in ~50 acres of rich mixed hardwood-conifer swamp. Canopy rather heterogeneous, variously dominated by Fraxinus nigra, Betula papyrifera, Abies balsamea, and/or Picea mariana, with occasional Ulmus americana. Understory of scattered Abies balsamea and Alnus incana. Forming loose carpets in moist organic substrate. Associates include Carex interior, C. leptalea, C. disperma, Rubus pubescens, Cornus canadensis, Mitella nuda, Aralia nudicaulis, Gymnocarp
