Habitat: Rolling forested moraine. Local, forming sparse patches in zone of increased moisture in mesic hardwood forest near where it grades to alder swamp. Canopy locally of maturing Populus tremuloides, Quercus rubra, and Acer rubrum. Patchy understory of Corylus cornuta, Acer saccharum, and Ostrya virginiana. Moist sandy-loam. Additional associates include Carex pensylvanica, Brachyelytrum aristosum, Cornus canadensis, Pteridium aquilinum, Trientalis borealis, Aster macrophyllus, Anemone quinquefolia, Clintonia b
