Habitat:
Infrequent in shallow soil over exposed diabase on crest and upper ledges of a 150-foot south-facing cliff, and in talus and small rock rubble on the steep slope adjacent to the cliff. Full sun on cliff ledges and cliff-top rock outcrop settings; Partial shade beneath a short and patchy canopy of Betula papyrifera, in scrubby woodland and outcrop shrubland settings.

Additional associates include Amelanchier spp., Diervilla lonicera, Rubus strigosus, Prunus virginiana, Symphoricarpos albus, Cornus rugosa, Aquilegia canadensis, Woodsia ilvensis, Carex deflexa.
