Habitat:
Frequent on a ridge top basalt (greenstone) outcrop. Full sun to partial shade of young Populus tremuloides. Shallow loamy soil over bedrock. Often forming patches. Also in surrounding aspen-birch forest.

Associates include Dichanthelium depauperatum, Danthonia spicata, Schizachne purpurascens, Poa compressa, Vaccinium angustifolium, Diervilla lonicera, Rhus glabra, Amelanchier spp., Arabis glabra, Aster macrophyllus, Fragaria virginiana, Achillea millefolium, Calystegia spithamea, Hieracium aurantiacum.
