Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Rugged bedrock terrain along the Jackfish River southeast of Thursday Bay, Crooked Lake, 18 miles north-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Local in conifer woodland on a sloping bedrock ridge. Patchy canopy of mature Pinus banksiana and Picea mariana, with sporadic Populus tremuloides, P. grandidentata, and Betula papyrifera. Partial sun to full shade. Thick carpets of Pleurozium schreberi and Dicranum mosses. Shallow silty soil over granite. Loose to fairly dense patch with hundreds of stems here.
Associated Species: Associates include Goodyera tesselata, Lycopodium clavatum, Cypripedium acaule, Platanthera hookeri, Melampyrum lineare, Aster macrophyllus, Vaccinium angustifolium.
