Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Strongly rolling bedrock terrain between Jackfish and Section 16 Lakes, 16 miles north-northeast of Ely. Occasional along the upland drainage south of Beavercut Lake.

Habitat: Wet-mesic forest on fairly level terrain. Interrupted canopy variously composed of Populus tremuloides, Picea glauca, Fraxinus nigra, Abies balsamea. Rather dense subcanopy of Fraxinus nigra. Patchy tall shrub layer of Alnus incana. Sandy silty-organic soil. Plants climbing into the understory to 6 feet high in some places; stems often 10 feet long or more.
Associated Species: Associates include Carex intumescens, Athyrium angustum, Equisetum sylvaticum, Galium asprellum, Rubus pubescens, R. strigosus, Acer spicatum.
