Locality: United States, Minnesota, Clearwater, Gently rolling outwash sand north of the Clearwater River, three miles northeast of Bagley.

Habitat: Uncommon in sunny openings in jack pine woodland. Patchy canopy dominated by mature Pinus banksiana. Patchy to occasionally rather dense understory of Abies balsamea. Full sun to partial shade. Coarse tan sand with shallow dark (loamy organic) upper layer. Trailing along the ground; horizontal subterranean stems ~2 inches deep. Often in carpets of Pleurozium schreberi and Dicranum mosses. [Approaching Diphasiastrum xzeilleri (Rouy) Holub]
Associated Species: Associates include Carex richardsonii, Oryzopsis pungens, Schizachne purpurascens, Anemone quinquefolia, Polygala paucifolia, Galium triflorum, Viola conspersa.
