Habitat: Uncommon and local on the upper portion of a moderately steep, 20-foot, north-facing, river bank. Narrow strip of mesic forest. Canopy of Betula papyrifera and Populus tremuloides. Understory of Acer spicatum, Corylus cornuta, and Abies balsamea. Clay over sand. Spreading, multi-stemmed shrubs, to 4 feet tall, with branches ~5 feet long.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Diervilla lonicera, Clintonia borealis, Streptopus roseus, Pyrola asarifolia, Mitella nuda, Galium triflorum, G. boreale, Athyrium angustum, Equisetum scirpoides, E. arvense, Carex pedunculata, C. peckii.
