Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain north of the Fernberg Road, 15 miles east-southeast of Ely.

Habitat: Frequent in an open woodland atop a 150-foot bedrock ridge near the southwest end of Moose Lake. Partial shade. Patchy canopy of young Populus tremuloides, Picea glauca, Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera. In patchy shrub layer with Salix humilis, S. bebbiana, Acer rubrum, and Amelanchier sp. Shallow silty soil over basalt (Knife Lake Group). Multi-stemmed shrubs, to ~7 feet tall.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Carex castanea, C. gracillima, Dichanthelium xanthophysum, Schizachne purpurascens, Heuchera richardsonii, Commandra umbellata, Aster macrophyllus, Melampyrum lineare, Rosa acicularis, Lonicera hirsuta.
