Habitat: dry-mesic oak forest dominated by Quercus rubra, with occasional Acer rubrum and Populus tremuloides. On gentle south-facing slope of rolling morainal hills. Brown sandy-loam. Associates include Corylus cornuta, Prunus virginiana, Cornus alternifolia, Zanthoxylum americanum, Acer negundo, Triosteum perfoliatum, Osmorhiza claytonii, Carex pensylvanica.
