Habitat: in moss mats and thin soil over bedrock atop east-facing, basalt cliffs and outcrops rising 50-60 feet above the lake. Low, wind-swept vegetation. In full sun. Associates include Achillea millefolium, Saxifraga virginiensis, Euphrasia hudsoniana, Corydalis sempervirens, Fragaria virginiana, heuchera richardsonii, Potentilla norvegica, Agrostis scabra, Danthonia spicata, Potentilla tridentata, Arabis hirsuta var. pycnocarpa.
