Habitat: Forested wetland complex ... In swamp forest dominated by Fraxinus nigra, with scattered Abies balsamea and Betula papyrifera. Understory of Abies balsamea, Fraxinus nigra, and Ulmus americana. Loose patches around tree bases and other raised microsites. Moist organic soil. Associates include Carex brunnescens, C. leptalea, C. disperma, C. aurea, Luzula acuminata, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Athyrium angustum, Cystopteris bulbifera, Osmunda cinnamomea, Streptopus roseus, Circaea alpina, Mitella nuda, Coptis trifolia, Aralia nudicaulis, Cornus canadensis, Asarum canadense, Rubus pubescens, Clintonia borealis, Trientalis borealis, Rhamnus alnifolia, Ribes triste.
