Habitat: on north to northwest-facing limestone/dolomite cliffs; small cliffs to 5 m tall along base of steep, 120ft, north-facing bluff. In rather dry cracks and on dry ledges. In partial shade from white pine-hardwood forest above cliff. Associates include Heuchera richardsonii, Campanula rotundifolia, Galium boreale, Aquilegia canadensis.
