Habitat: in ecotone between mixed hardwood swamp and upland woods. Sparse canopy of Larix laricina, Acer rubrum, and Betula papyrifera. Slightly spongy, moist to wet organic soil. Associates include Alnus incana, Osmunda cinnamomea, Rubus pubescens, R. strigosus, Eupatorium maculatum, Dryopteris cristata, Gaultheria procumbens, Clintonia borealis, Carex stricta, Phragmites australis.
