Habitat: in overgrown dry prairie on steep southeast-facing slope on edge of large outwash terrace; In community dominated by Schizachyrium scoparium and Bouteloua curtipendula. Soil is excessively-drained loamy sand over sandy/gravelly outwash. Associated with Bouteloua hirsuta, Pulsatilla nuttalliana, Petalostemon purpureum, Lithospermum caroliniense ssp. croceum, Carex brevior.
