Habitat: Rugged terrain...old-growth upland white cedar forest on gradual, northwest-facing slope. Interrupted canopy dominated by large Thuja occidentalis, with occasional large Picea glauca, Betula cordifolia, B. papyrifera, and Acer saccharum. Fairly dense, tall shrub layer of Corylus cornuta and Acer spicatum. Rocky, loamy soil. Additional associates include Lonicera canadensis, Clintonia borealis, Dryopteris intermedia, Thelypteris phegopteris, Anemone quinquefolia, Streptopus roseus, Aster macrophyllus, Trientalis borealis, Trillium cernuum, Maianthemum canadense.
