Habitat: moist, low spots in mesic oak forest dominated by Quercus rubra, Q. macrocarpa, Acer rubrum, and Tilia americana. Understory predominantly Corylus cornuta and Acer rubrum. Dark silty-loam over clay. Level terrain. Associates include Trillium grandiflorum, Thalictrum dioicum, Uvularia sessilifolia, Asarum canadense, Viola pubescens, Athyrium angustum, Onoclea sensibilis, Solidago flexicaulis, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Carex gracillima, C. woodii, C. radiata, Parthenocissus inserta.
