Habitat: in rich, mature maple-basswood forest on level uplands ... In forest with heavy canopy cover dominated by Acer saccharum and Ulmus rubra. Soils consist of 1.5 feet of silt loam over hard clay mantle. Associated with Hydrophyllum virginianum, Viola pubescens, Circaea lutetiana ssp. canadensis, Galearis spectabilis, Carex amphibola var. turgida.
