Habitat: in ephemeral wet depressions in mature maple-basswood stand on level uplands on the Wells-Rush River Moarine. In forest with patchy canopy of Acer saccharinum and Fraxinus nigra. Soils consist of 1.5 feet of dark, silt loam over hard, clay mantle. Associated with Leersia virginica, Scutellaria lateriflora, Thelypteris palustris, Iris virginica var. shrevei, Thelypteris palustris.
