On large outcrops of dry, upturned, interbedded, slate and graywacke of the Thomson formation; in dry, thin soil and in cracks of bedrock. Full sunlight to partial shade under Pinus strobus & Picea glauca. Associates include Viola adunca, Woodsia ilvensi
