Habitat: on 40- to 100-foot, north to northwest-facing, mesic to dry-mesic, ferrodiorite cliffs...in crevices, often below overhangs. In shaded settings below Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, Picea glauca, and Sorbus decora. Associated species include Dyropteris fragrans, Trientalis borealis, Huperzia x josephbeitelii, H. x buttersii, Maianthemum canadense.
