In full sun to partial shade of shrubs and small trees including Prunus virginiana, Populus tremuloides, Rosa acicularis, Rhus glabra, Amelanchier sp. Additional associates include Calystegia spithamea, Achillea millefolium, Fragaria virginiana, Apocynum androsaemifolium, Selaginella rupestris, Schizachne purpurascens, Carex backii, Diervilla lonicera.
