Habitat: river terrace 15 feet above the floodplain ... Dry-mesic oak forest dominated by maturing Quercus macrocarpa, Tilia americana, and Populus tremuloides. Tall understory of Ostrya virginiana. Open shrub layer. Sandy-loam soil with thick duff layer. Mostly on moderately steep, 20-foot, north- to west-facing terrace slopes. Associates include Carex pensylvanica, C. deweyana, C. sprengelii, Viola canadensis, Sanguinaria canadensis, Solidago flexicaulis, Symphoricarpos albus.
