Habitat: forming small colonies on small, fairly dry sandstone cliffs on mid portion of steep, northeast-facing, 200-foot slope. Under maple-basswood forest canopy dominated by Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, and Quercus rubra. Rooted in moss mats over bare rock. Associates include Mitella diphylla, Cystopteris fragilis, C. bulbifera, Cryptogramma stelleri, Dicentra cucullaria, Solidago flexicaulis, Polygonatum commutatum, Ribes cynosbati.
