Habitat: Level area near base of moderately steep, 100-foot, south-facing slope. Local here in ecotonal band between sugar maple-birch on the slope and aspen-birch-spruce-fir on broad terrace below. Occasional in brushy, wet-mesic to mesic habitat. Sparse canopy of Fraxinus nigra and Populus tremuloides. Tall, fairly dense understory dominated by Corylus cornuta, Alnus incana, and scattered Prunus virginiana. Loamy soil. Associates include Carex novae-angliae, C. leptonervia, Claytonia canadensis, Aster macrophyllus, Anemone quinquefolia, Lycopodium dendroideum, Maianthemum canadense, Rubus strigosus.
