Habitat: On the margin of wet forest/lowland hardwood forest saturated from recent beaver dams nearby. Soil is loamy sand. Growing with Ulmus thomasii, Corylus cornuta, and Ostrya virginia [sic] in the subcanopy, and Fraxinus pensylvanica, Pinus strobus, Populus tremuloides, Quercus macrocarpa, and Betula papyrifera in the canopy. Ground associates include Aralia nudicaulis, Osmorhiza claytonii, Uvularia grandiflora, Thalictrum dioicum, Sanicula marilandica, and Aster macrophyllus.
