Habitat: Rugged terrain ... northern hardwood forest atop extremely steep, 200-foot, east-facing ridge west of the [river] and northeast of [lake]. Canopy dominated locally by rather small Acer saccharum. Understory dominated by Acer saccharum. Fairly shallow, rocky, loamy soil in vacinity of diabase and gabbro outcrops (under forest canopy) at crest of slope. Associates include Polygonatum pubescens, Aralia nudicaulis, Viola pubescens, Osnorhiza claytonii, Milium effusum, and Acer saccharum seedlings.
