Habitat: in old-growth upland white cedar and especially in the wet-mesic ecotone between upland cedar and cedar swamp. Lower portion of gradual to moderately steep, south-facing, 200-foot slope...Occurs in canopy most commonly with Thuja occidentalis, Picea glauca, and Betula allegheniensis. Additional associates include Acer spicatum, Corylus cornuta, Thelypteris phegopteris, Equisetum sylvaticum.
