Habitat: In mature maple-basswood forest dominated by Quercus borealis, Tilia americana, Acer saccharum, and Fraxinus pennsylvanica, with Ostrya virginiana below. Ground layer fairly diverse with such species as Adiantum pedatum, Cryptotaenia canadensis, Aralia racemosa, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Hepatica acutiloba and Menispermum canadense.
