Habitat: riverbank in shade of open-grown Quercus macrocarpa. Lower part of rather steep, 20 foot, southeast-facing slope. Several feet above stream level. Silty soil. Associates include Scutellaria lateriflora, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Parthenocissus inserta, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Vitis riparia, Zanthoxylum americanum, Viburnum lentago.
