In fairly rugged terrain ... on mid to upper portion of extremely steep, 25-foot, south-facing slope ... Sandy-gravelly soil. Partial shade of Betula papyrifera and Quercus macrocarpa. Associates include Rhus glabra, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Symphoricarpos occidentalis, Juniperus communis, Glycyrrhiza lepidota, Solidago hispida, S. nemoralis, Astragalus neglectus, Aster laevis, Apocynum androsaemifolium, Gentiana andrewsii, Bromus intermis, Agrostis alba, Andropogon gerardii.
