Habitat: in mature sugar maple - basswood forest. Area approx. 60-70 yards from shoreline in a low depression. Worms evident, very thin leaf litter, soil very compacted. Soil loamy sand. Growing with numerous Dryopteris carthusiana and Athyrium filix-femina. Other associates include Hydrophyllum virginianum, Carex pedunculata, Thalictrum dioicum, Ribes cynosbati, Acer saccharum seedlings, Arisaema trifolia, Aralia nudicaulis, Phryma leptostachya, Carx sprengelii, Dirca palustris.
