Habitat: mature and multi-aged Maple-Basswood forest on heavy loam soil. Understory dominated by Acer saccharum, Ulmus rubra, and Tilia americana. Associated species include Carex pedunculata, Uvularia grandiflora, Botrychium virginiana, Viola pubescens, Arisaema triphyllum, and Aralia racemosa.
