Habitat: white cedar swamp along drainage ... Interrupted canopy of Thuja occidentalis. On hummocks of Sphagnum and other mosses. Full shade to partially sunny situations. Forms carpets. Associates include Carex disperma, C. leptalea, Coptis trifolia, Rubus pubescens, Cornus canadensis, Smilacina trifoliata, Trientalis borealis, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Clintonia borealis, Petasites frigidus, Gaultheria hispidula, Ledum groenlandicum.
