Habitat: on exposed, south-facing rock outcrop areas of long bedrock-controlled ridge...In very shallow soils accumulated in small depressions and fissures in bedrock. Typically open canoopy except for occasional shading by taller shrubs or krumholtz trees. Associates include Danthonia spicata, Schizachne purpurascens, Amelanchier sp., Prunus pensylvanica, Diervilla lonicera, Aster macrophyllus, Populus tremuloides, Abies balsamea.
