Habitat: on several larger granite outcrops. In thin soil along crevices of exposed bedrock. In full sun to partial shade of Juniperus virginiana. Associates include Rhus glabra, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Carex bicknellii, Cyperus squarrosus, Poa compressa, Andropogon gerardii, Aristida basiramea, Hedeoma hispida, Woodsia ilvensis, Soldago canadensis, Rubus spp., Parthenocissus inserta. Occurring in a variety of levels of past distrubance ranging from rather heavily grazed to mostly pristine.
