Habitat: Fairly rugged forested terrain ... at the base of steep, 40-foot, northeast-facing slope. Forming dense carpets ... in ecotonal area betwee mesic hardwood forest on slope and ash swamp in wetland basin. Shaded below canopy of Abies balsamea, Acer saccharum, Betula papyrifera, and Fraxinus nigra. Dense understory of Acer spicatum. Moist sandy-loam; thick litter and humus. Associated species include Gymnocarpium dryoptris, Equisetum sylvaticum, Athyrium angustum, Aralia nudicaulis, Aquilegia canadensis, Clintonia borealis, Carex pedunculata, Lonicera canadensis.
