Habitat: Large tamarack swamp complex ... sparse-canopied area; in full sun to partial shade of scattered Larix laricina and Ulmus americana. Patchy, tall understory dominated by Alnus incana. Growing on hummocks around old (dead) tree bases. Moist organic soil. Associates include Impatiens capensis, Equisetum arvense, Cypripedium reginae, Thalictrum dasycarpum, Arisaema triphyllum, Cardamine bulbosa, Carex lacustris, Parthenocissus inserta, Cornus stolonifera, Betula glandulifera.
