Growing on hummocks around old (dead) tree bases. Moist organic soil. Associates include Impatiens capensis, Equisetum arvense, Cypripedium reginae, Thalictrum dasycarpum, Arisaema triphyllum, Cardamine bulbosa, Carex lacustris, Parthenocissus inserta, Cornus stolonifera, Betula glandulifera.
