Habitat: In small spring fen in fairly rugged terrain ... in shallow water in five-acre sedge fen especially near pools of upwelling groundwater. In ravine between the steep slopes of 150-foot ridge to south and the more gradual slopes of much higher ridge (Lookout Mountain) to north. Spongy, deep, saturated peat. Full sun. Associates include Scirpus hudsonianus, Carex exilis, Eleocharis compressa, Juncus stygius, Drosera anglica, D. intermedia, Utricularia intermedia, Equisetum fluviatile, Sparganium minimum. Upgradient in ravine are swamp communities dominated by Larex laricina, Thuja occidentalis, and/or Alnus incana.
