Sandy soil. Associates include Dichanthelium perlongum, Andropogon gerardii, Stipa spartea, Poa compressa, Carex siccata, Artemisia campestris, Helianthemum becknellii, Achillea millefolium, Selaginella rupestris, Lithospermum canescens, Centaurea biebersteinii, Commandra umbellata, Physalis heterophylla, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Arctostphylos uva-ursi, Quercus ellipsoidalis.
