In rolling terrain ... On margin of dry woodland dominated by Quercus macrocarpa, Pinus banksiana, and Betula papyrifera, with occasional Pinus resinosa. Full sun to partial shade. Sandy soil. Associates include Dichanthelium perlongum, Andropogon gerardii, Stipa spartea, Poa compressa, Carex siccata, Artemisia campestris, Helianthemum becknellii, Achillea millefolium, Selaginella rupestris, Lithospermum canescens, Centaurea biebersteinii, Commandra umbellata, Physalis heterophylla, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Arctostphylos uva-ursi, Quercus ellipsoidalis.
