Habitat: oak woodland / savanna; Shaded by Quercus ellipsoidalis, Q. macrocarpa, and Juniperus virginiana. Dry mossy area in shallow loamy soil near exposed granite bedrock. Associates include Carex pensylvanica, Amorpha canescens, Parthenocissus inserta, Rubus strigosus, Vaccinium angustifoliua, Galium boreale.
