Habitat: on moist, shady, northeast-facing, 5 to 35-foot, basalt cliffs in small gorge at mouth of intermittent stream. On mossy ledges and in crevices. Associates include Cystopteris fragilis, Saxifraga virginiensis, Impatiens capensis, Prenenthes alba, Circaea alpina, Campanula rotundifolia, Aquilegia canadensis, Euphrasia hudsoniana.
