Habitat: Gently-rolling sandy outwash plain ... in tamarack swamp ... Mostly on outer margins of swamp where the patchy to interrupted canopy is co-dominated by Larix laricina and Fraxinus nigra, with occasional Betula papyrifera. . Understory with Fraxinus nigra, Alnus incana, Abies balsamea, and Ulmus americana. Moist peat. Additional associated species include Rhamnus alnifolia, Rubus pubescens, Mitella nuda, Cypripedium reginae, Platanthera aquilonis, Circaea alpina, Caltha palustris, Pyrola secunda, Linnaea borealis, Galium asprellum, Thelypteris palustris, Carex gynocrates, C. leptalea, C. hysteracina [sic], Glyceria striata, Parthenocissus inserta, and Picea glauca seedlings.
