Habitat: In strip of white cedar swamp surrounding small spring fen in fairly rugged terrain ... in fairly broad ravine between the steep slopes of 150-foot ridge to south and the more gradual slopes of much higher ridge (Lookout Mountain) to north. Infrequent in Sphagnum moss hummocks of Carex stricta in sunny canopy gaps. Additional associates include Carex leptalea, Glyceria striata, Alnus incana, Myrica gale, Ledum groenlandicum, Cornus stolonifera, C. canadensis, Aster puniceus, Lycopus virginicus.
